Year One Curriculum

Build the foundation

Your first year is spent in Sioux Falls, largely integrated with Sioux Falls Family Medicine residents. Certain rotations are best completed in a higher-volume referral center; a state-of-the-art simulation center builds procedural proficiency before rural practice.

Beyond rotations

The parts most schedules do not show

Daily Noon Conference

In addition to required rotations, you'll attend daily noon conference — an in-house curriculum across disciplines, complemented by scheduled conferences and journal clubs for broad exposure to family medicine.

Continuity OB Clinic

A once-weekly clinic for uninsured and low-income women. You take primary responsibility for prenatal care, delivery, and postpartum care — averaging 13 continuity deliveries in Year 1 (65 total deliveries on average across residency).

Funded retreat with Pierre residents

First-year residents join second- and third-year Pierre residents for a program-funded three-day weekend at a resort you choose together.
